Eighteen: To Drink Or Not To Drink

Eighteen: To Drink Or Not To Drink

By Tom Phelps

The legal drinking age in the United States is 21. There are only a handful of countries that have the same high-end age limit for drinking. In fact some countries have absolutely no limit on the age an individual can legally consume alcohol.

Many groups are very vocal about their desire to see the legal drinking age reduced. Part of their argument stems from the fact that in most areas of life an individual is accepted as an adult at the age of 18. They can vote, enlist in military service and in most cases marry. With that amount of responsibility why shouldn’t they be allowed to begin consuming alcohol legally at the same age?

Some groups assert that by lowering the drinking age a parent can help teach their child how to drink responsibly before the age of 21. Many states do allow teens to consume alcohol in the presence of their parents prior to the age of 21.

Proponents of lowering the drinking age cite 20th century prohibition as a reason to lower the age limit. The belief is that if prohibition failed because many citizens manufactured liquor in less than ideal ways to provide thirsty citizens a form of alcohol then it stands to reason that there will be those who will find ways to drink even if they have not yet reached their 21st birthday.

What many people do not understand is that the drinking age is actually set by individual states and no federal law exists for a minimum age limit for alcohol consumption. The reason many believe it is federally mandated is because in the 1980’s congress pressured states into adopting a higher legal drinking age or risk losing highway funds. In the face of a potential infrastructure crisis all states eventually complied.

What research tends to suggest in relation to the staggered change in the drinking age laws is that many young people would cross state lines to consume alcohol if the adjoining state had a lower legal age limit. There is compelling research to indicate that alcohol related traffic accidents and fatalities involving those under 21 have dropped dramatically since the age limit was bumped.

Despite reports that indicate binge drinking is the norm for those under 21 there is research to support the claim that there are fewer people between 18-21 drinking in the 21st century than there was prior to the universal change.

Further study indicates vandalism rates have decreased in many states with a higher legal age limit. Studies also suggest that teen suicide rates also decline when alcohol is removed from the picture.

There are those that state what is a commonly held belief, “Teens are going to drink anyway so why not lower the age limit so we can keep an eye on them.” This notion indicates that teens have no control over their decision-making; this same argument is used in relation to sex and drugs, yet it is clear that teens are capable of saying no to choices they conclude are unhealthy. Perhaps we are not giving them enough credit.

Where there is a strong commitment to enforcement of minor in possession laws there seems to be a corresponding reduction in problems that can be overlooked in some jurisdictions.

Lives are being saved because a law exists that seeks to help young people grow into responsible adults while attempting to keep those on the highway safe. Is the ultimate problem one where young people demand rights or parents that abdicate their role when it comes to alcohol consumption?

Someone once said people (children included) tend to rise or fall to your expectations. What do your children honestly believe you expect from them? Maybe it’s time to tell them.

Organic Food Market in China Soaring

   Posted by: admin

When people think of China they really don’t think about organic foods. In fact, due world news about their pollution in China many people see it as a polluted wasteland. Of course, China is a huge place, and the pollution is only near the factories and down River from these regions. We have all heard about the dolphins in the Yangtze River, and we know that river will be void of life and oxygen within less than a year.

Most of us have also heard that off the coasts of Shanghai and Beijing there are huge dead zones in the ocean. Never in 1 million years we would we consider that the Chinese are very much into organic foods. But did you know that they import an abundance of organic foods from all over the globe, and they still have over 1000 certified organic growers domestically.

So not only are the Organic Farm product imports doing well there, but it is a new huge domestic industry. In fact, there is more organic certified food production in China than in the United States; I bet you didn’t know that? Not only that but it is growing by leaps and bounds, and there are expected to be 2500 certified organic growers domestically in China by 2012.

The growing middle class in China wants safer food products, and they realize how important organic foods are. You must understand it goes good with their culture, and fits right in with their eastern style medicine, and holistic health habits. The organic food market in China could easily become a $10 billion industry within the next decade. Please consider all this.

The Essential Guide to Outdoor Drinking

The Essential Guide to Outdoor Drinking by David P Walker

Drinking in the summer sun seems to go hand in hand with our favourite summertime activities of barbeques, music festivals and watching the cricket.

Longer days and warmer nights mean that alfresco drinking can become a regular occurrence, but unfortunately the result of excessive outdoor drinking can be all too British. Sunburnt backs, parched mouths and sore heads are usually the result of a beer-fuelled afternoon of cricket.

Luckily, there are ways to avoid this. Following our simple advice means summer 2009 can be a memorable one, rather than a messy one.

Al fresco alcohol advice

Just because you’re at a festival doesn’t mean you should have cider for breakfast. Although the hot weather can act as a temptation to make you want to start drinking earlier, laying off the alcohol until the evening is a good idea. Try sticking to the soft drinks until just before your favourite headliner hits the stage to avoid drinking alcohol throughout the day.’

Making room for food is also very important, although you might not feel like eating in the heat, eating will help slow down the effects of any alcohol you drink and is a good excuse to try the food on offer at the festival.

Water works

Long, ice filled alcoholic drinks may look like the perfect summertime refreshment, but they actually work to increase your thirst.

“Alcohol is well-known to be a diuretic,” says Moira L Plant, professor of alcohol studies at the University of the West of England. “It makes the kidneys excrete more water in the urine, which in turn makes you more dehydrated because you pee more fluid than you drink.”

Mixing alcohol with the hot sun can have some serious consequences, ranging from drink-fuelled dehydration, which can leave you feeling woozy, sick and ready to pass out, to more serious conditions such as organ failure or even a heart attack.

“There’s a condition that’s called ‘holiday heart’,” advises Oliver James, head of clinical medical sciences at Newcastle University. “It’s when people out drinking while sunbathing get dehydrated and develop irregularities in their heart beat.”

You can help minimise the risk of dehydration by drinking plenty of refreshing soft drinks and water. If you’re drinking alcohol, alternating between alcohol and glasses of H20 will help reduce dehydration. In the middle of the day, when temperatures hit their peak, it is best to cut out alcohol completely.

Be sun-savvy

Studies show that bad cases of sunburn can be linked to heavy drinking, reapplying at least factor 15 regularly when you’re outside can help prevent sunburn. Also keep an eye on friends who look as though they are turning red as well, especially those who tend to fall asleep in the garden and may wake up looking barbequed.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in skin cancer, particularly among young women,” says Moira. “Strong summer sun can be particularly damaging, but while people take sun cream with them when going to the beach, it’s not something they always think about when sitting outside at a festival.”

Pace yourself

According to scientists, drinking alcohol disrupts the brain’s ability to coordinate between ‘sensory input’ and ‘motor output’. In short - too much booze interferes with your co-ordination, and can make you a slurring, staggering mess. Not a great place to be when you need to negotiate the way to your tent.

Sadly, being under the influence of alcohol could put you in danger too - statistics show that eight out of 10 pedestrians killed on Friday and Saturday nights have been drinking. Consider this on your way back home once the bands have finished.

The best way to minimise negative effects of alcohol is to pace yourself and drink safe amounts. Try sticking to the soft drinks until later your favourite headliner hits the stage to avoid drinking alcohol throughout the day.

Finally, don’t let the buzz of the festival make you forget the government’s alcohol guidelines. Men are recommended to stick to three to four units of alcohol (that’s no more than four single vodkas or two pints of ordinary strength beer) per day, while for women it’s two to three units (not more than one 175ml glass of wine or three single vodkas).

Improving Cat Food Taste – How To Make Your Cat Like Her Healthy FoodBy Moses Wright

In order to own a healthier cat, you have decided to change your cat’s food diet after much pondering and discussion with your veterinary. But knowing that you own a finicky and choosy cat, you wonder if there is anything you can do to help your cat likes its new diet.

First, you should introduce the food slowly and steadily, sudden and abrupt changes can force even the most easy to please cat reject her food for a day or two even when she is hungry. This is the last thing you want because experts feel that a starved cat is at a higher risk of developing fatty liver disease, and the fatter the cat, the higher the risk.

Apart some a gradual change of food, here are a list of things you can do to improve the taste of your cat’s new food:

1. Add a dash of salt.

2. Food with a strong odor is enticing. Mix a little odiferous cat food or some meat baby food (no onions!).

3. Add some moistened cat treats.

4. Change the texture slightly, if it is ground, add some meat chunks, raw meat, or fish (mackerel, salmon, tuna).

5. Mix a teaspoon of old food, or change out old food, food left out loses preferred odor and texture.

6. Add warm water, homemade beef or chicken broth and warm the dish in the microwave or by steaming.

8. Try adding a different flavor or formula or add a little canned food with beef tallow in it. Mix different consistencies - wet and dry, canned pumpkin, minced sardines, tuna or clam juice.

9. Dab a little on his paw to get him accustomed to the taste as he cleans it off.

10. Top dress with cottage cheese.

Food aside, you can try changing the feeding dishes. Some cats prefer eating from a flat dish (don’t ask me why!), some don’t like plastic or metal material and prefer ceramic, others might just like heavier dishes that stay put on the floor as they eat.

If your cat is usually not a picky eater, there could be some other reasons why she is not eating as much or showing little interest. She could just be sick – down with a mouth disorder problem which makes eating painful and difficult or maybe a troubled digestive system.

The above cat food taste improvement tips should work fine if your healthy cat is refusing her food. Visit your veterinarian if she refuses to eat the new diet for a day, try not to go beyond 48 hours. The worse possible situation is to go back to her old diet food and change her diet from there gradually.

The Versatility of Frozen Fish by Andrew Burt

Fish is probably the most versatile of all frozen foods. It provides a great source of protein, is low in calories and many varieties contain essential minerals and Omega 3 oil. It is also a very economical way to buy fish as there is no wastage. Brought frozen very little pre-cooking preparation is required.

Health:

People today are more health conscious than ever before. The health benefits of fish make it an excellent food source for children and adults alike. As white fish is easy to digest it is ideal for older people and those recovering from illness. While some people do have an allergic reaction to seafood, few have a reaction to all varieties of fish.

Fish such as sardines, mackerel, tuna, salmon, sea bass are an excellent source of Omega 3 oil. This fish oil can help reduce cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease as well as having a beneficial effect in treating anxiety and depression. Recent studies have shown that children who have Omega 3 oil incorporated into their diet on a regular basis are able to concentrate for longer periods of time. Omega 3 is also used to help children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder-ADHD.

Fish has very few calories-making it ideal for those on a diet, especially when steamed, baked or grilled. When oven baked or steamed many types of fish have little salt, no sugar or saturated fats. Fish which is frozen retains all the nutritional values of fresh fish when it is cooked following the manufacture’s guidelines.

Convenience:

Fish which has been prepared and frozen is the ideal convenience food. The quick freezing techniques used by reputable companies produce small ice crystals which does not impair the flavour, texture or taste of the fish. Buying fish which has been frozen can be cooked straight from the freezer in a relatively short time, making it a perfect meal for people who lead busy lifestyles.

One of the great advantages of buying fish which has been pre-packaged and frozen is that there is no fiddly preparation. Having to fillet, de-scale and de-bone fresh fish can be tricky, time consuming and very off putting for many people. Pre-pared fish is the perfect solution for incorporating fish into a diet without any fuss. Some manufacture companies also include complete meals in their frozen ranges making them some of the most nutritious read-meals available.

Economy:

Fish is the ideal economy food when it has been frozen. There is no wastage, you simply remove the amount you need from the freezer. As fish cooks quickly, compared with many cuts of meat, it can be a cost effective way to save on fuel. With the continuing advances in souring and catching fish, all varieties are available throughout the year if they are frozen and the cost remains stable.

Choose frozen fish from reputable manufactures to ensure you are buying high quality fish which does not incorporate fillers or bulking ingredients. This way you can enjoy the convenience, health benefits and taste of one of the greatest sources of protein with confidence.

Youngs Sea Food offer a wide range of frozen fish.
