Cuisinart DTC 975 Programable Auto Brew 12 Cup Coffeemakers Review by Marcos Wallace

I’ll admit before I start that I didn’t actually need a new coffeemaker before buying this!

That said, my old coffeemaker wasn’t brilliant and I found the flavor deteriorated very quickly whilst sat on the warming pad. I was looking for a coffeemaker with a thermal carafe in order to keep it nice and hot and also for a larger capacity given the number of coffee drinkers who pass through my house. As someone who’s been through a few coffeemakers in my time, I knew from the stores, wholesale clubs etc that Cuisinart was a pretty prominent brand and after some more investigation, I decided that the Cuisinart DTC 975 Programable Auto Brew 12 Cup Coffeemakers looked like the number one contenders.

Features for Cuisinart DTC 975 Programable Auto Brew 12 Cup Coffeemakers, as listed on the box:

~ Thermal carafe is stainless and double insulated.
~ Fully programable.
~ Shuts off automatically upon completion of brew cycle.
~ Coffee remains hot for several hours.
~ The patented lid prevents bitter taste by sealing out air and keeping coffee fresh. Thermal carafe is stainless and double insulated therefore keeping the coffee tasting as fresh as it was just made for hours.
~ The carafe holds up to 12 cups of coffee.

Our experience with Cuisinart DTC 975 Programable Auto Brew 12 Cup Coffeemakers:

So far, I’m delighted with the results. The large carafe keeps even my family in coffee, the quality of taste is great and the temperature is kept just right in the thermal carafe for at least 8 hours with no staleness creeping in due to the fact there is no warming plate.

When the coffee has brewed, the coffeemaker beeps to inform you then the lid seals it and the machine switches itself off which is a nice feature.

Cleaning and maintenance is very straightforward with the base just needing a wipe with a damp cloth while the basket, carafe and lid can be washed in hot water then rinsed thoroughly.

So, are we happy with our purchase of Cuisinart DTC 975 Programable Auto Brew 12 Cup Coffeemakers? Yes! The flavor is much improved over our old system and there is far less bitterness as you get with cheaper makers.

Halloween and the Appeal of American Candy

Halloween and the Appeal of American Candy by Patricia Montana

The tradition of Halloween is relatively new to the United Kingdom. Until a couple of decades ago, at the end of every October and beginning of November British children were more likely to be found on busy high streets with a home-made life-sized dummy of a man - often stuffed into a pram or a trolley - asking shoppers for “a penny for the Guy” (Guy, of course, being Guy Fawkes, whose effigy is traditionally burnt on bonfires on 5th November, as a punishment for almost blowing up the Houses of Parliament in the 17th century). The pennies collected would usually be given to parents who would buy fireworks, to be set off on Bonfire Night.

However, in recent years the Halloween festival, celebrated the American way, has become increasingly popular in Britain, and ‘penny for the Guy’ has all but disappeared. Halloween parties and evening door-knocking by miniature witches, goblins and vampires have become norms that give children something to look forward to when the nights start drawing in, and which give supermarkets an excuse to stock up on bumper packs of sweets for ‘victims’ to hand out to trick-or-treaters.

But with British children having such fun with a very American tradition, we think it would be a lovely idea to give trick-or-treaters American candy, helping children to have an authentic American Halloween.

Here’s a selection of our favourite American candy which would be perfect for handing out to trick-or-treaters.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Fondant chocolate cups filled with peanut butter, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups are an all-American classic. There are three Reeses Peanut Butter Cups in each pack.

Reeses Pieces

Tasty peanut butter in crispy, crunchy candy shells - absolutely delicious, Reeses Pieces come in 43g bags and are perfect for handing out to trick-or-treaters, though you may be tempted to eat a few yourself!

Hersheys

Hersheys Cookies n Creme is a white chocolate bar which contains chocolate cookie bits - so it’s crunchy and chocolatey at the same time. Alternatively, there’s Hersheys Cookies n Chocolate, which is made of milk chocolate instead of white chocolate.

Hersheys Whatchamacallit is a peanut flavoured crisp candy topped with a layer of caramel and dipped in chocolate - and its name is pretty unforgettable! Or if you’re expecting a lot of little horrors knocking on your door, there’s Hersheys Miniatures. In this 150g bag you’ll find a bite sized selection of classic American chocolate, including Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, Hershey’s Krackel with milk chocolate and crisped rice, Hershey’s Special Dark and Hershey’s Mr Goodbar with creamy chocolate and crunchy peanuts.

Other classic Hersheys products include Milk Duds - delicious milk chocolate covered caramel candies - and Hersheys Kisses, which have an unusual shape and come in individually foil wrapped pieces, so they’re perfect for trick-or-treaters.

Oreo Cookies

Oreo cookies are the classic American sandwich biscuit, and the ‘proper’ way to eat them is to twist, lick and dunk - apparently! Oreo Cookies are two chocolate flavoured biscuits sandwiched together with a delicious vanilla flavoured filling. One box of Oreo Cookies contains 16 biscuits - so there’s plenty to go round, even if you get a huge troupe of little horrors knocking on your door!

Oreos also come in bags of miniature-sized pieces, which are the perfect size for smaller mouths.

Cracker Jacks

Cracker Jacks are little boxes of caramel coated popcorn and peanuts, and they’re a true American classic which have been around for over a hundred years. Cracker Jacks are famous for the tiny prizes concealed in each box, and for appearing in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Each pack contains three 28g boxes of Cracker Jacks.

Fruit Gushers

A box of Fruit Gushers contains six 25g pouches of these delicious little chewy sweets that ooze a watermelon flavoured liquid when you bite into them. Is your mouth watering yet?

Candy Corn

If you’re only going to give out one type of American candy to your trick-or-treaters, then it has to be Candy Corn - it’s the traditional American Halloween treat. These little bite-sized pieces of candy are shaped to resemble corn kernels, and no Halloween candy collection would be complete without them!

Patricia Montana is a Texas born and bred gal who currently lives in the UK. To fulfil her passion for American candy she has to buy from specialist suppliers.

How Doe the Earth as a Whole Benefit From Organic Foods Being Grown? by Sarmaad Amin

Organically grown foods do much more than just taste good and protect you from consuming harmful toxins. They also help the Earth as a whole to be a better place. This is why so many people want to grow organic foods and why so many consumers out there are eagerly buying them. We all know that it is our responsibility to make Earth better than it is right now. When we contribute to pollution and global warming though we are going to end up with a world that isn’t so wonderful to live in.

There are plenty of traditional methods out the for growing food. However, they aren’t the best for the environment. Think about all of the food that is grown and to know that almost all of it involves processing that is harmful for Earth should be a fact that makes you uneasy. So what are you going to do about it? Hopefully you will decide to grow some organic foods yourself or at the least buy them when you can.

Traditional methods of growing food involve using chemicals to kill pests and to kill weeds. These toxins though get into the soil and into water supplies. They also get into the air that we are breathing. When you consume these foods there is still some residue left as well that you will be taking into your body. Animals that live in bodies of water where the run off goes can be harmed. Should you consume any of that seafood then it is even more toxins being taken into your body all the time.

Keeping the bodies of water out there free from pollution is an effort that everyone needs to be involved in. That way all forms of aquatic life found there will be able to thrive. These forms of growing food also take valuable vitamins and nutrients out of the soil. What happens then is that that land is no longer viable for growing food on. With organic methods though the soil is fertilized with natural compost instead of fertilizers with harmful ingredients in them.

With organic farming, the area of land that is used to grow the foods are rotated. That means they aren’t continually used again and again. They have the opportunity to be able to revitalize and in many instances these areas of land end up being healthier than they were before anything was planted there to begin with.

It doesn’t take as much of our energy resources to successfully grow and process organic foods as well. This means that those nonrenewable resources can be saved for something else. The biggest fossil fuel that is used with traditional methods of growing food is petroleum. Once what we have of it is gone, it will never be replaced. We also find that less water is used to grow organic foods. That means we aren’t depleting the amount of that which we have either.

Water may seem like it is an abundant resource, but we do need to be very careful with it. Even if we have plenty of water out there, if it is polluted then it isn’t going to be safe for us to consume. By growing organic foods or buying them though you are showing that you care about the Earth. You are showing that you want to do your part to help it be cleaner in a variety of ways.
The efforts of just one person can make a huge difference for everyone. Just think of how much good we can do for the Earth if all of us pitch in just a little bit. Never think that your own efforts don’t matter or that they aren’t enough to eliminate pollution and the depletion of our resources out there.

Organic food is accepted by more and more people. The Organic Grocer is an online organic food Sydney based retailer. They provide organic delivery in a wide area of Sydney. Eg: delivery organic food central coast, delivery organic food penrith and organic food blue mountains.

Freezing Coffee Beans Retains Freshness - True or False ? by Kevin Daltoun

How should Coffee beans be stored, so you can enjoy the tastiest coffee from your bean to cup espresso machine One of the suggested methods is to put your ground coffee or coffee beans in the freezer. So does storing coffee in your freezer actually work What are the advantages and are there any disadvantages

Freezing is a traditional method used to preserve food and in todays modern kitchen with a fridge or freezer it is easy and convenient A diverse selection of foods can be frozen. Freezing even maintains many of the vitamins and nutritional value of a wide variety of foods. Coffee, however, isn’t as likely a candidate for storage in the freezer.

Coffee Beans have four main enemies against freshness: air, heat, light and moisture.

But doesn’t Freezing protect Coffee beans from these elements?

One problem is that the Coffee Beans are porous, and freezers are full of many strongly flavoured foods, odours and smells. The porous beans take on the flavour of the other foods in the freezer Flavoured coffees can be pleasant, but no one wants to drink seafood or garlic flavored coffee.

Due to their porous nature moisture can also be absorbed by the coffee beans. Moisture can cause deterioration and loss of flavor. The more often you take coffee out of the freezer and put it back in, the more moisture absorption takes place into the bean. If you absolutely need to freeze some coffee because you have a large excess you’d like to keep, only freeze it once. The more you take it in and out of the freezer, the more damage you do.

Freezing also breaks down the oils in the beans. The oils contribute to the flavour of the coffee. As the oils are broken down the coffee loses its flavour and the distinctive taste of the coffee is lost.

The freezer is not the place to store your coffee beans. The best results and to ensure coffee retains its taste store coffee in a cool, dry and air tight container away from the light and any source of heat. Freezing coffee is possible, and is best if you only freeze it once. The resulting loss of flavour and quality from repetitive freezing makes it a method of storage to stay away from.

Your best bet is to purchase only enough beans or ground coffee to supply you for 1-2 weeks. That way you will enjoy Coffee from your Expresso Coffee Maker or Coffee machine at its freshiest and best.
